Looking to relocate their headquarters, Foster Made, a digital technology agency, partnered with 3north to create a modern, open office in which varied environments promote productivity and creativity. For the new space, company co-owner, Shawn Maida, and his wife, Sara, purchased the former Foster Photography Studio building located in Richmond’s Grace Street Commercial Historic District and originally constructed in 1927 to serve as the photography studio for Walter Washington Foster, the city’s premier portrait photographer at the time.
The team opted to utilize federal and state historic tax rehabilitation credits, which guided the restoration of many unique features within the building including the plasterwork, which was meticulously recrafted by local plaster artisan Rebekah Jamerson. Restoring the building’s original features provided a unique opportunity to create an open, modern workspace within the building’s historic backdrop. Color and lighting were used to give depth and openness to spaces that were previously dark and highly compartmentalized. Tektonics Design Group created a new free-span wood counter that is mounted just in front of the original antique mirror, which now serves as a backsplash in the company’s modern kitchen. A matching island creates a place of gathering.
Additionally, the team at Foster Made has made beautiful use of the ground-level display windows throughout the year. Rotating works of art have included a gingerbread replica of the 400 block of East Grace Street streetscape during the holiday season, a display for Black History Month honoring African American innovators, and a programmed light exhibit that brings their software development skills to the real world. In the same way that Foster Studios’ portrait displays used to draw in passersby, today’s art installations now serve as a point of interest for pedestrians.
