2016 Monument Avenue is a one-story building and one of Richmond’s earliest Modernist statements. It was built in 1955, prior to the 1957 completion of the Reynolds Metals campus on West Broad Street. The architect of the then-medical building was Frederick Hyland, a Richmond architect who was greatly influenced by time spent working directly under the hand and spell of Frank Lloyd Wright. It had been rescued and lovingly restored by Jo Watson and John Homs as a home for their design and strategic branding company: J H I. Bo Nelson and Chris Avery of WholesalePet.com are the current owners.

Built in 1955, the building located at 2016 Monument Avenue was originally constructed as two rectangular buildings divided by a small courtyard. The exterior remains very similar to the original design with several additions, including a zinc letter “O” that found it’s way from the sign of a bowling alley built during the same era.

The minimalism of the interior space creates a calm feeling of focus for the team at Wholesale Pet. Primarily bare walls and a long walkway lead to symmetrical workspaces with glass-paned corners that allow natural light to filter through the space. A design ethos that focused on planes of color and texture and and their intersection when re-designing the interior is still present from the mid 2000s renovation. These details create a space that is intentional, minimal, comfortable and focused. Hyland’s decision to construct a modern building among its Victorian-style neighbors, and the previous and current owners’ decision to preserve it, is incredible.
