With the 1949 completion of his own Usonian-style house in southside Richmond, Frederick T. "Bud" Hyland launched an architectural practice that confronted the traditional revival styles then dominating the city.
Bud was educated at the University of Illinois, Champagne, and later apprenticed to Frank Lloyd Wright in the Taliesin Fellowship. During a 30-year career that produced over 25 residences and six commercial buildings, Bud never wavered from his dedication to mid-century modernism.
Today, Bud’s designs are highly valued and sought after for the same design qualities of connectedness to site, casual family living, and openness that originally appealed to his clients.
This presentation will survey the career of this innovative and determined architect, focusing on specific houses that trace the evolution of Bud’s modernism as adapted to Richmond. Particular attention will be paid to Bud’s relationship with his clients, and their relationship to the houses he created with them.
The presenter, Jody Lahendro, knew Bud personally and interviewed him many times in the late-1990s before his death in 2002.
