The new Fairfield Area Library was designed by Quinn Evans of Richmond and Tappé Associates of Boston. It is a two-story, 44,803 sq. foot facility. It sits on a 10-acre site at the southeast corner of Laburnum Avenue and Watts Lane. The construction on the new building began in June 2018, and was managed by Gulf Seaboard Construction. It opened to the public on October 6, 2019.The design concept for both the site and building was inspired by two prominent African Americans: The educator, author, and orator Booker T. Washington, and the sociologist, historian, and civil right activist W.E.B Du Bois. Both had worked as activists to provide equal rights for African American communities, and to elevate their social status through either education or entrepreneurship. Although they shared a common goal, their approach to achieving that goal was very different.

Their inspiring story informed the overall shape of the building in the form of two crossing bars representing the two philosophies of these prominent figures. The moment within the building where these two paths meet is celebrated by a grand two-story entry lobby. Relative to the building site, their common goal for inclusion, social mobility, and advancement is represented by a ellipse that defines a front, back and side yard which are further delineated by access roads and pedestrian paths.
