Tour of Piankatank River House

  • 670 Iron Point Lane Cobbs Creek, VA, 23035 United States (map)

On Saturday May 20 we will venture to the Piankatank River House in Mathews County where Modern Richmond will be providing a pair of two-hour tours of the property, one from 10:00 am to Noon and one from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Located at 670 Iron Point Lane in Cobbs Creek and owned by Page and Sanford Bond, the property contains a barn, house, pool house, and pool, all beautifully sited at the confluence of the Piankatank River and Godfrey Bay.

The efficient, 1,100 square foot cottage encloses a kitchen, living/dining area, two bedrooms and two baths. The expansive view provided by the 17-foot-tall, fully-glazed corner creates a sense of largesse and ease. Sixteen foot overhangs along the riverfront contribute to the sense that the outdoor terraces are just as much a part of the living space as the interiors. The walls, painted pale gray on the interior and dark gray at the exterior, are clad in Boral, a synthetic siding made from plastic bottles and fly ash. An allee of sycamore trees at the edge of a field of wheat leads to a domestic landscape defined by parged, four foot tall walls and simple, archetypal building forms.

The buildings and landscape were designed by Sanford Bond, FAIA, Principal Emeritus and a co-founder of 3North. This was the first house Bond, a locally renowned architect who has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Society, American Institute of Architects, among many other honors, designed for himself. The final plan for the house was achieved after 30 iterations. The barn was the first building on the site, and provides shelter for boats, landscaping equipment, and projects. The house, built by Connemara Corporation, was finished in 2016.

The owners will be joining the tour to answer attendees' questions.

Parking will be available on site.
