On May 26 we’ll tour the site of what is said to be Virginia’s oldest outdoor market, the 17th Street Market, and Main Street Station’s magnificent Train Shed. Baskervill designed the market’s transformation from underutilized frame structure into a granite-paved multi-purpose outdoor public “living room” and plaza. The goal of the renovated market is to provide a flexible space that supports the community and varied uses like pop-up galleries, roller skating, yoga classes, and outdoor dining for nearby restaurants.
After we hear from the market’s project designer Tim Hamnett (formerly with Baskervill and now with RIC design build), we will walk through the head house and train shed of Main Street Station, a Beaux Arts style masterpiece designed in 1901 by Philadelphia architects Wilson, Harris, & Richards. Local architects SMBW finished a stunning renovation of the shed and head house in 2016. The station now provides rail service at the platform level of the historic shed and bus service at street level. In addition, Main Street Station serves as a vast multipurpose event space. Project architect Fred Hopkins of SMBW will describe the project’s evolution. Jeannie Welliver, Project Development Manager with the City of Richmond, will share how Main Street Station and the 17th Street Market will be increasingly interconnected.
Ample parking is available in the lot on the west side of Main Street Station at 1500 E Main Street.
