Old meets new: A modernist transformation

  • 912 South Gaskins Road Richmond, VA, 23238 United States (map)

Visitors to 912 S. Gaskins Road will arrive at a two-acre property that was originally part of a farm. The oldest section of the house was originally constructed as a horse barn.

The drama of the house derives from the sharp contrast between the older gable roofed brick dwelling and the unabashedly modern addition that Dan Ensminger designed for the current owners. The flat-roofed, white-stuccoed addition built by Dunkum Inc. for the Lightfoots provides panoramic views of the landscape through floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto covered terraces. Brick piers and exposed brick walls in the new addition reference the house's origins.

The Lightfoots bought the property because of its beautiful site, but having grown up in a mid-century house designed by her father, an architect, Maria Lightfoot, an interior designer, knew she wanted to live in a modern house with few visual barriers between inside and outside. The house is filled with a curated collection of modern and antique furnishings.

Speakers at the event will include the owners, Mark and Maria Lightfoot, and the architect, Dan Ensminger.
